I found this article at autospeed.com and thought you might be interested in reading it: 'Damper Dyno' - How to check the condition of your car's shocks. A damper is designed to apply a controlled amount of friction to the suspension spring - thereby preventing it from oscillating indefinitely. Without dampers you'd drive over a road bump and still be feeling the suspension bouncing up and down for a good 50 metres down the road. And by delivering a means of resistance against spring movement, dampers also help to reduce body roll. You can read the article at: http://www.autospeed.com/A_108385/cms/article.html
