The Start of the Beaut Ute
"Could you please make a car that we can go to church in on Sunday and take the pigs to market on Monday," wrote a Gippsland farmer's wife in 1933 to Ford Managing Director Hubert French. Bank managers at the time wouldn't lend money to farmers to buy a passenger car, only a farm truck, hence the plea from one very fed-up woman! French handed the letter to a young man in the Design Department, Lewis Bandt. Lew came up with a design that incorporated the front half of a sedan with the rear half of a light truck and the Coupe Utility was born. His design was approved and production started in 1934. In 1935 Henry Ford I invited Lew to Detroit to design a utility for the US market, especially for the State of Texas. Manufacturers around the world eventually copied Lew Bandt's design but Ford Australia was the first to build and market the Coupe Utility and has produced an unbroken line of coupe utes ever since.

- Honda motorcycles are fast becoming one of the preferred motorcycles for police use across Australia. In Western Australia, a total of 92 Honda ST1100PTs are in use by police for general patrol, accident prevention, crime detection and selective law enforcement. In NSW, Honda motorcycles currently comprise over 50 per cent of the police fleet of 96 machines with the ST1100PT for highway work joined by the off road ability of 29 Honda XR 400 trail bikes. BMW motorcycles are widely used by police in other states.
- Peter Gazzard, winner of the 1999 Dutton Grand Prix Rally and Mercedes-Benz dealer in Mt. Gambier, South Australia, has opted for a change of horses for this year's event. Instead of a Subaru WRX, Peter will be driving the exclusive Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG, a 5.5-litre high-performance saloon that rockets it from 0-100 km/h in 5.7 seconds.
- For a limited time Jaguar buyers can pounce on 0% interest on all new Jaguar XJ and XK Series. In order to obtain the 0% interest finance package, customers pay one third of the price of their new Jaguar on purchase date, then 36 monthly instalments at 0% interest. Alternatively, a plan can be tailored to suit a customer's individual requirements. Customers must pay for their on-road costs in cash.
- Two-time GTP champion Jim Richards completed a dominant debut for his new Porsche 911 GT3 with a comfortable win in the Century Batteries GTP 1-Hour Showroom Shootout yesterday at Phillip Island, Victoria. The win by 11.6 seconds over Wayne Park's Ferrari F360 was Richards' third of the weekend, after two 12-lap events Saturday, and proved the potential of the Porsche for the new GTP Nation's Cup series starting in April.
